Elder Brown’s Backslide
by Harry Stillwell EdwardsGenre: Comedy
Setting: Rural, Rustic
Format of Original Source: Short Story
Recommended Adaptation Length: Two Hours
Candidate for Adaptation? Not Likely
EXCERPT:
A farmer’s wife sends the farmer off to market with a very specific shopping list…but gets lured in by the local tavern instead. When he finally arrives home in a drunken stupor after having lost the mule, his wife forgives him.
COMMENTS:
This story is fairly backwards in its treatment of alcoholism (and the wife’s forgiveness of it), and doesn’t really stand the test of time. You might possibly turn the story inside out as a cautionary tale, but there are stronger PLOTS out there if you’re interested in exploring either alcoholism or forgiveness.
