Created in 1981 by Jeb Brooks, who continues to underwrite the program, the Clauder Competition celebrates the distinctive voices of our region’s playwrights and brings their work to the attention of the greater theatrical community. The Clauder Competition generates over 200 submissions each cycle. Each play receives at least two evaluations and all writers are sent a letter including an individualized response from readers. Plays by the three Clauder winners are included in the Little Festival of the Unexpected (see below). The Grand Prize winner will go on to receive a production and cash prize. The goal of the Clauder Competition for New England playwrights is to provide exposure, encouragement, and critical feedback to promising playwrights who typically receive little more than a return postcard for material they send to theaters and producers. Clauder Grand Prize: a $3,000 cash award, and a workshop production followed by a full production the following season. Two Gold Prizes: $1,500 cash awards each. Additional prizes will also be awarded to the best play from each of the six New England states. No updates as of October 2023.
